You open CapCut, the window appears, and then... nothing. Just a flat black rectangle where the editor should be. Sometimes the whole app is dark; sometimes the menus load fine but the video preview stays black while everything else works. Either way, it's frustrating, and it stops you cold before you can edit a single clip.
The good news is that a CapCut black screen is rarely a sign that something is seriously wrong. In the large majority of cases it comes down to your computer's graphics setup, usually outdated drivers or a clash between CapCut and your GPU. That's the same family of problem whether you see a capcut blank screen on the whole window or just a black preview area.
Below are the six fixes that clear this up, ordered from quickest to most thorough. Work through them in order and you'll almost certainly have CapCut rendering normally again.
- A CapCut black screen on launch is almost always a graphics driver or GPU issue, not a broken install.
- The two fixes that solve it most often are updating your graphics drivers and toggling hardware acceleration in CapCut's settings.
- If the app window itself is black, restarting it, running as administrator, or a clean reinstall usually brings the interface back.
Why CapCut shows a black screen on launch
CapCut leans on your computer's graphics hardware (the GPU) to draw its interface and play back video smoothly. When that hand-off between the app and the GPU goes wrong, the result is a black area where you'd expect to see picture. Here's what's usually behind it:
- Outdated or buggy graphics drivers. This is the number one cause. A driver that's old, or that shipped with a known bug, can fail to render CapCut's preview or its whole window.
- Hardware acceleration conflicts. CapCut uses your GPU to speed things up, but on some setups that feature is exactly what triggers the capcut black screen pc problem. Turning it off forces software rendering instead.
- The wrong GPU is being used. Laptops with two graphics chips (an integrated one and a dedicated one) sometimes hand CapCut to the wrong one, which can leave the preview black.
- A corrupted or incomplete install. If CapCut's program files got damaged, the interface may not draw at all.
If CapCut doesn't just go black but closes itself entirely, that's a slightly different issue. Our guide on what to do when CapCut keeps crashing on launch covers that scenario in detail.
Fix 1: Restart CapCut and your PC
Start with the boring one, because it genuinely works more often than you'd think. A black screen can be the result of a one-time hiccup in how CapCut grabbed the GPU when it started up.
- Close CapCut completely. If it won't close normally, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, find CapCut in the list, and click End task.
- On a Mac, right-click the CapCut icon in the Dock and choose Quit, or use Cmd + Q.
- Restart your computer. This clears out any stuck graphics processes in the background.
- Open CapCut again and check whether the window and preview render normally.
If the screen is still black after a fresh restart, the problem is more than a temporary glitch, so move on to your graphics drivers.
Fix 2: Update your graphics drivers
This is the fix that solves the most cases, so don't skip it even if your drivers "feel" recent. A current driver gives CapCut a stable, bug-free way to talk to your GPU.
On Windows, the most reliable route is the chip maker's own tool:
- NVIDIA: install GeForce Experience (or use the NVIDIA app) and let it update to the latest Game Ready or Studio driver.
- AMD: use the AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition app to check for and install the newest driver.
- Intel: use the Intel Driver & Support Assistant to grab the latest graphics driver.
You can also let Windows try: press Windows + X, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click your graphics card, and choose Update driver. The manufacturer tools are more thorough, though.
On a Mac, graphics drivers come bundled with the operating system, so the equivalent step is to install any pending macOS updates from System Settings > General > Software Update. Restart afterward and reopen CapCut.
If you only have time for one fix, make it this one. Updating graphics drivers clears the capcut black screen on launch issue for most people.
Fix 3: Turn off hardware acceleration in CapCut
Hardware acceleration lets CapCut offload work to your GPU, which is great when it works and the cause of a black preview when it doesn't. Switching it off makes CapCut render in software instead, which sidesteps the conflict.
- Open CapCut. If the whole window is black you may not be able to reach settings, in which case do this fix after Fix 5 has the interface showing again.
- Open the Settings menu (usually the gear icon or under your account/menu in the top corner).
- Look for a Performance section or any option mentioning hardware acceleration or GPU acceleration.
- Turn it off, then close and reopen CapCut.
If the preview comes back, you've found your culprit. You can try turning hardware acceleration back on later once your drivers are fully updated; with current drivers the conflict often disappears. If turning it off slows playback down noticeably, our tips for when CapCut is running slow or lagging can help you claw back performance.
Fix 4: Force CapCut to use the right GPU (laptops)
Many laptops have two graphics chips: a low-power integrated one built into the processor, and a faster dedicated one for heavy work. If Windows points CapCut at the wrong chip, you can end up staring at a black screen. Telling Windows which GPU to use fixes it.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to System > Display > Graphics (on some versions it's under Display > Graphics settings).
- Find CapCut in the list, or click Browse and point it to CapCut's
.exefile. - Click Options and choose a preference. Try High performance (your dedicated GPU) first; if that doesn't help, switch to Power saving (the integrated GPU).
- Save, then relaunch CapCut.
It's worth trying both options, because the black screen can come from either chip depending on your hardware and drivers. This step mainly applies to Windows laptops with NVIDIA or AMD dedicated graphics.
Fix 5: Run CapCut as administrator (Windows)
Sometimes CapCut can't fully access the system resources it needs to draw its window, and a black screen is the result. Running it with elevated permissions rules that out.
- Close CapCut completely.
- Right-click the CapCut shortcut or its program icon.
- Choose Run as administrator, then click Yes on the prompt that appears.
If that brings the interface back, you can make the change permanent: right-click the shortcut, choose Properties > Compatibility, tick Run this program as an administrator, and click OK. From then on CapCut always launches with the right permissions.
While you're in the Compatibility tab, you can also try ticking Disable fullscreen optimizations. On a few setups that option clears up a stubborn capcut blank screen.
Fix 6: Reinstall CapCut cleanly
If none of the above worked, the install itself is likely damaged. A clean reinstall replaces every program file with a fresh copy, which fixes a black screen caused by corruption.
- Uninstall CapCut. On Windows, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find CapCut, and choose Uninstall. On a Mac, drag CapCut from your Applications folder to the Trash and empty it.
- Restart your computer to clear out any leftover processes.
- Go to the official site,
capcut.com, and download the desktop version again. Wait for the download to finish completely before opening it. - Install the fresh copy and launch it.
Always grab the installer from capcut.com rather than a third-party site, since unofficial copies are a common source of broken installs. If the download or installer itself misbehaves, our guide on what to do when CapCut won't install on Windows walks through the fixes, and you can also follow the clean walkthrough in how to download CapCut on Windows 11.
