You click download, the bar creeps to a few percent, and then nothing. A CapCut download stuck at 0%, frozen halfway, or simply refusing to begin is one of the most common snags people hit before they ever open the editor. The good news: it's rarely CapCut's fault, and the cause is usually something on your end that takes a minute or two to fix.
Most of the time the culprit is your browser, your antivirus, or your internet connection getting in the way. Below are seven fixes, ordered from quickest to most thorough. Try the download again after each one so you know exactly what did the trick.
- A stuck CapCut download is almost always a browser, antivirus, or connection issue, not a problem with CapCut itself.
- Switching browsers and clearing cache fixes the majority of downloads that freeze or never start.
- Always grab the installer from the official capcut.com site, never from a mirror or third-party page.
First, why does the CapCut download get stuck?
When a download won't start or stalls partway, it's almost never because the file is broken on CapCut's servers. The usual suspects are local:
- Your browser has a cached or half-finished version of the file confusing the download.
- Antivirus or your firewall is quietly blocking the connection.
- Your Wi-Fi dropped for a moment and the transfer never recovered.
- There isn't enough free disk space to save the installer.
- A VPN or proxy is routing you somewhere slow or blocked.
Once you know that, the fixes make a lot more sense. Work through them in order.
Fix 1: Cancel and restart the download
It sounds obvious, but a stalled transfer rarely un-stalls itself. Don't sit and wait on a frozen progress bar.
- Cancel the current download in your browser's downloads list.
- Delete any partial file (often named something like
CapCut_installer.exe.crdownloador.part) from your Downloads folder. - Reload the official capcut.com page and click download again.
A fresh start clears a surprising number of cases where CapCut won't start downloading or hangs at the same point every time.
Fix 2: Try a different browser
If CapCut is not downloading in one browser, the fastest test is to switch to another. Browsers handle downloads differently, and a misbehaving extension or a corrupted profile in one can block a file that sails through in another.
If you normally use Chrome, try Edge or Firefox (or the reverse). Edge is already installed on every Windows PC, and Safari is built into every Mac, so you always have a backup ready.
An ad blocker or download-manager extension is a frequent cause of a CapCut download problem. Open a private/incognito window, which disables most extensions, and try the download there before switching browsers entirely.
Fix 3: Clear your browser cache
Browsers store pieces of pages and files to load them faster, but a stale cache can leave a download won't-start situation where the click does nothing or the file never finishes. Clearing it forces a clean request.
- Open your browser's settings and find Privacy or History.
- Choose Clear browsing data.
- Tick Cached images and files (you can leave passwords and history alone).
- Clear it, close the browser fully, reopen it, and try the download again.
On most browsers you can jump straight there with Ctrl + Shift + Delete (use Cmd on a Mac).
Fix 4: Pause your antivirus briefly
Security software sometimes scans or blocks an installer mid-download, which can freeze the transfer or stop it from starting. To rule this out, pause your antivirus protection, run the download, then turn protection straight back on.
Only pause antivirus when you're downloading from the official capcut.com website, and re-enable it the moment the file finishes. Never disable it for files from unknown sources or mirror sites.
This step is also worth checking on Windows if the file downloads but then gets blocked or quarantined. Once it's safely on your PC, you may also see a SmartScreen prompt during install, which is normal and covered in our CapCut SmartScreen fix guide.
Fix 5: Check your connection, firewall, and VPN
A shaky connection is one of the most common reasons CapCut won't download. Run through the basics:
- Test your internet by loading another large site or a speed-test page. If everything's slow, the issue is your connection, not CapCut.
- Restart your router if the connection is patchy. Unplug it for 30 seconds and power it back on.
- Turn off any VPN or proxy. These can route you through a slow or restricted server that throttles or blocks the download. Disconnect and try again.
- Check your firewall isn't blocking your browser. On a work, school, or public network, downloads are sometimes restricted entirely. If so, try a home or mobile connection.
Switching from Wi-Fi to a wired connection, or to your phone's hotspot, is a quick way to confirm whether the network is the problem.
Fix 6: Make sure you have enough disk space
If your drive is nearly full, the browser can't save the installer and the download stalls or fails without a clear message. The CapCut installer itself is small, but the app needs room to install afterwards too.
- On Windows, open Settings → System → Storage to see what's free.
- On Mac, open the Apple menu → About This Mac → More Info → Storage.
- Aim for at least a few gigabytes free, then clear out old downloads or temporary files if you're tight on space.
It's also worth checking that your Downloads folder is actually writable, not on a removable drive that's been disconnected or a synced folder that's paused.
Fix 7: Use the direct download link from the official site
If a button on a page isn't responding, going straight to the source often gets things moving. Head directly to capcut.com, find the desktop download for your system (Windows or Mac), and start it from there rather than from a search-result link or an old bookmark that may point to a stale page.
Restarting your computer first clears any stuck browser or network process and gives you a clean slate, which resolves a lot of stubborn cases. Once the file lands, you're ready to install. If you're on Windows 11, our step-by-step Windows 11 download guide walks through the rest. If the installer downloads but then refuses to install, see our guide on CapCut not installing on Windows.
Restart the download, switch browsers, clear your cache, and check your antivirus and connection. One of those gets the vast majority of stuck CapCut downloads moving again.
