You found the perfect trend, opened CapCut to use it, and the template gallery just sits there — a spinning loader, a blank grid, or a flat "failed to load" message. When CapCut templates are not loading, it's frustrating, because templates are half the reason a lot of people open the app in the first place.
The good news: this is almost never a sign that something is seriously broken. CapCut templates are pulled from CapCut's servers in real time, so when they won't load the cause is usually something small and fixable — your internet connection hiccuped, you're not signed in, the app's cache is stale, or you're running an older version that can't reach the current library.
Below, we'll explain why templates need a live connection, then walk through the fixes in order. Recheck the gallery after each step so you know what did the trick.
- CapCut templates live online, so they need an active internet connection and a signed-in account to load — most template problems trace back to one of those two things.
- An out-of-date app is the other big cause: older versions can fail to fetch the current template library, so updating CapCut fixes a lot of cases.
- Work through the fixes in order — connection, sign-in, clear cache, update, then region — and recheck the template gallery after each step.
Why CapCut templates need to load online
Unlike your timeline edits, templates aren't stored on your computer. The template gallery — including the trending, recommended, and search results you scroll through — is fetched live from CapCut's servers every time you open it. That design keeps the library fresh, but it also means a few things have to be in place for templates to appear:
- A working internet connection, since the whole gallery is downloaded on demand.
- A signed-in CapCut account, because much of the template experience is tied to your account.
- A reasonably current app version that can talk to CapCut's current servers.
- Template availability in your region, since not every template is offered everywhere.
When any one of those is missing, you'll see a CapCut template error or simply an empty grid. That's why the fixes below start with the connection and your account before touching anything deeper.
Why CapCut templates won't load
When CapCut templates won't load, it almost always comes down to one of these:
- A connection problem — Wi-Fi dropped, the network is slow, or something is blocking CapCut from reaching its servers.
- You're signed out — your session expired or you never logged in, so the template library won't populate.
- A stale or corrupted cache — old cached data is getting in the way of fresh content loading.
- An out-of-date app — an older CapCut build can't fetch the current template list, leaving the gallery blank.
- Region or availability limits — a specific template (or templates in general) may not be offered where you are.
- A temporary server hiccup — occasionally the slowdown is on CapCut's end, not yours.
You don't have to guess which one it is. Work down the list and you'll land on the cause quickly.
1. Check your internet connection
Because templates download live, this is the first thing to rule out. Open a browser and load a couple of regular sites. If they come up fast, your connection is fine and you can move on. If they're slow or won't load, the network is the problem — and fixing it fixes templates too.
- Confirm Wi-Fi is on and you're on the right network, not a guest or neighbor's network.
- If you're on Wi-Fi, move closer to the router or switch to a wired Ethernet connection for a steadier link.
- Toggle your connection off and on, or flip Airplane mode on for a few seconds to force a clean reconnect.
Tip: Templates are bandwidth-hungry because each preview is a small video. A connection that's good enough for browsing can still be too slow for the gallery. If you can, test on a faster network — even your phone's hotspot — to see if speed is the issue.
2. Make sure you're signed in
This catches more people than you'd expect. CapCut can quietly sign you out — after an update, a long idle period, or a password change — and once you're logged out, the gallery often shows up empty or won't load. If CapCut can't open template content for you, check your account first.
- Look at the top corner of CapCut for your profile picture or a Sign in / Log in prompt.
- If you see a sign-in prompt, log back in with your usual method (email, phone, Google, Facebook, or TikTok, depending on how you set up the account).
- If you appear signed in but templates still won't load, sign out fully and sign back in to refresh the session.
If logging in is itself the problem, that's a separate issue worth fixing first before anything else will work.
3. Restart CapCut, then your PC
A clean restart clears a lot of temporary glitches, including a gallery that got stuck mid-load. CapCut may have lost its connection in the background without recovering, and a fresh start forces it to reconnect.
- Fully close CapCut. On Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, find any
CapCutentries on the Processes tab, and choose End task so nothing lingers in the background. - On a Mac, press Cmd + Q to quit, or force-quit from the Apple menu if it won't close.
- Reopen CapCut and check the template gallery again.
- If templates still won't load, restart your whole computer — that resets the network stack and clears stuck connections.
It sounds basic, but it has a high success rate, so don't skip it.
4. Clear CapCut's cache
Over time CapCut builds up a cache of thumbnails and data to speed things up. When that cache goes stale or corrupts, it can block new content from loading — which is exactly what an empty template grid looks like. Clearing it forces CapCut to pull everything fresh.
- From inside CapCut: open Settings (usually the gear icon or your profile menu) and look for a Clear cache option. Clearing the cache here does not delete your projects — it only removes temporary files.
- If you can't find that option, restarting your PC clears much of the temporary data on its own.
Note: Clearing the cache is safe for your edits. Your saved projects and drafts live separately, so removing temporary template thumbnails and cached data won't touch the work you've already done.
5. Update CapCut to the latest version
This is one of the most common fixes for a CapCut template error. The template system changes on CapCut's side over time, and an older build can lose the ability to fetch the current library — so the gallery loads blank or throws an error while the rest of the app works fine.
- Open CapCut and look in Settings or the menu for an About or Check for updates option, and install any update it offers.
- If there's no in-app update, go to the official site, capcut.com, download the latest desktop installer, and run it over your current version.
- Restart CapCut afterward and open the template gallery again.

Heads up: Only ever download CapCut from capcut.com. Third-party "download" sites often bundle outdated or modified versions that won't connect to templates properly — and may not be safe.
6. Check VPN, region, and template availability
If your connection is solid, you're signed in, and you're up to date but templates still won't load, the issue may be where CapCut thinks you are.
Turn off your VPN or proxy. A VPN can route CapCut through a region where templates behave differently or don't connect at all, which the app may report as a failure to load. Disconnect it entirely and try again. If you also use a system proxy, check Settings > Network & internet > Proxy on Windows and confirm no proxy is forced.
Remember that templates are region-based. Not every template is available everywhere, and the trending mix differs by location. If one specific template won't open while the rest of the gallery loads fine, it may simply not be offered in your region — an availability limit, not a fault on your end.
7. Check CapCut's server status
Once you've ruled out your connection, account, cache, version, and region, the last thing left is CapCut itself. Servers occasionally have a slow patch or a brief outage, and when that happens, templates won't load no matter what you do locally.
A quick search for "CapCut server status" or "CapCut down" will tell you whether other people are hitting the same wall right now. If it's a widespread outage, there's nothing to fix on your side — wait it out and try again later. If everyone else seems fine, the cause is one of the local fixes above, so it's worth a second pass.
Still stuck? If templates load but previews stutter, look choppy, or the app struggles to render them, that can point to a graphics issue rather than a loading one. Our guide on a CapCut GPU / graphics driver error covers that case.
After the template loads: a quick note on watermarks
Once your templates are loading again and you've built your video, one thing is worth knowing before you export: some template-based exports can carry a CapCut watermark depending on the assets used. If you spot one, it's not a bug — and it's usually avoidable. Our guide on a CapCut watermark on your export explains why it shows up and how to remove it cleanly.
