If you do most of your editing on a Mac, the free desktop version of CapCut is a real upgrade over the phone app — a wide timeline, proper keyboard shortcuts, and room to work. The catch is that a lot of people get tripped up on the small Mac-specific stuff: the .dmg file, dragging the app into Applications, and that security prompt the first time you open it. This guide on how to download CapCut on Mac walks through every step so none of it catches you out.

It's quick. From clicking download to dropping your first clip on the timeline usually takes about five minutes. Here's exactly what to do — and what to expect on Apple Silicon versus Intel.

Download CapCut for Desktop Get the latest official version from capcut.com
Quick answer
  • Download CapCut only from the official site, capcut.com — never a third-party mirror.
  • The Mac app is free, comes as a .dmg, and installs by dragging it into Applications.
  • On first launch you'll see a Gatekeeper prompt; choose Open and you're set.

Before you start: a quick compatibility check

CapCut for Mac runs on just about any Mac sold in recent years, but a 10-second check saves headaches later:

  • macOS version: A reasonably current version of macOS. If your Mac still gets system updates, you're almost certainly fine.
  • Chip: Both Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3 and newer) and older Intel Macs are supported. More on telling them apart below.
  • RAM: 8 GB is plenty for everyday edits; more helps with 4K and longer timelines.
  • Storage: Keep a few GB free for the app, plus room for your video projects and exports.
  • Internet: Needed for the download and for online extras like templates and auto-captions.

If your Mac is running smoothly today, it can almost certainly run CapCut.

Step 1: Go to the official CapCut website

Open Safari, Chrome, or whatever browser you prefer and head straight to the official CapCut site. This is the part that matters most. There are plenty of lookalike pages that bundle junk software with the installer, and the easiest way to avoid every one of them is to only use the real source.

Use the Download for Mac button near the top of this guide, or type capcut.com directly into your address bar. If a download page ever looks even slightly off — odd domain, pushy pop-ups, a "special" installer — close it and start again from the official site.

Step 2: Download the CapCut .dmg file

On the CapCut homepage, look for the Download button. The site usually detects that you're on a Mac and offers the correct version automatically. Click it, and your browser will start downloading a disk image — a file ending in .dmg, named something like CapCut.dmg.

The download is typically a couple hundred MB and finishes in well under a minute on a normal connection. You'll usually find it waiting in your Downloads folder or in the browser's download list.

What's a .dmg? A .dmg is just Apple's standard "disk image" — a container that opens into a window where you install the app. It's completely normal for Mac downloads.

Step 3: Open the .dmg and drag CapCut to Applications

Double-click the CapCut.dmg file to open it. A window pops up showing the CapCut app icon next to a shortcut to your Applications folder. This is the classic Mac install pattern:

  1. Click and hold the CapCut icon.
  2. Drag it onto the Applications folder shown in the same window.
  3. Release. macOS copies the app into Applications — that's the install.

Once it finishes copying, you can close the window. It's good housekeeping to eject the disk image afterward: right-click the mounted CapCut drive on your desktop (or in Finder's sidebar) and choose Eject. You can also delete the original .dmg from Downloads — you won't need it again.

Step 4: Open CapCut for the first time (the Gatekeeper prompt)

Open your Applications folder and double-click CapCut. The first time you launch any app downloaded from the internet, macOS shows a security check called Gatekeeper. You'll usually see a message like "CapCut is an app downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?"

Click Open. That's it — the app launches and macOS remembers your choice, so you won't be asked again. This prompt is normal and expected; it appears for almost every app you install outside the Mac App Store.

If your version of macOS won't show an Open button right away, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down, and click Open Anyway next to the CapCut message. Then try launching again.

Step 5: Start your first project

When CapCut opens, you land on the home screen. From here you can:

  • Click Create project (or New project) to jump straight into the editor.
  • Optionally sign in with a TikTok, Google, Facebook, or email account to sync projects and unlock cloud features — but this is entirely optional. You can edit and export without ever signing in.

Drag a video clip onto the timeline and you're officially editing. The whole point of CapCut for Mac is that bigger workspace, so resize the window, spread out, and enjoy it.

Apple Silicon vs Intel: which version do you get?

Modern Macs come with one of two chip families, and it's worth knowing which you have. The good news: the official CapCut installer handles both, so most people don't have to think about it at all.

To check your Mac, click the Apple menu in the top-left corner and choose About This Mac. Look at the Chip (or Processor) line:

  • If it says Apple M1, M2, M3 or similar, you have an Apple Silicon Mac.
  • If it mentions an Intel processor, you have an Intel Mac.

CapCut runs natively and smoothly on Apple Silicon, and it also runs well on supported Intel Macs. Download from capcut.com either way and you'll get a version that works. If macOS says the app is damaged or won't open

Now and then a Mac throws an unexpected message — most commonly "CapCut is damaged and can't be opened" or a flat refusal to launch. Don't panic, and don't go hunting for a different download site. This is almost always a macOS security quirk, not a broken app.

A few things to try in order:

  • Re-download from capcut.com. An interrupted download can corrupt the .dmg. Delete it and grab a fresh copy.
  • Check Privacy & Security. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security and look for an Open Anyway button tied to CapCut.
  • Confirm you dragged it to Applications. Running the app straight from the mounted .dmg can cause odd behavior — install it properly first.

If the "damaged" message keeps coming back after a clean re-download, that's a known macOS quirk with a specific fix, and we cover it step by step in our dedicated troubleshooting guide.
