If you've been editing on your phone and want more room to work, moving to the desktop is a real upgrade. Learning how to download CapCut on a Windows PC takes only a few minutes, and the steps are the same whether you're on Windows 10, Windows 11, or an older machine you've kept running.
CapCut is a free video editor made by ByteDance, and the desktop version gives you a wider timeline, proper keyboard shortcuts, and a lot more breathing room than the mobile app. The one rule that matters most: get it from the official source. This guide keeps things simple and walks a complete beginner through the download, the install, and what to do once it's on your computer.
- Download CapCut only from the official site, capcut.com, so you avoid bundled junk.
- The whole process is four steps and usually takes under five minutes.
- CapCut desktop is free, and you can start editing without creating an account.
What you need before you download
You don't need a powerful gaming rig to run CapCut. Most laptops and desktops from the last several years handle it fine. Before you download CapCut for your Windows computer, it helps to confirm a few basics:
- Windows version: Windows 10 (version 1903 or newer) or Windows 11. A 64-bit system is required.
- RAM: 4 GB will run the app; 8 GB or more makes editing feel smoother, especially with longer clips.
- Free storage: A couple of gigabytes for the app itself, plus extra room for your video files and exports.
- Internet connection: You'll need one to download the installer and to use online extras like templates and auto-captions.
If you want the full breakdown of minimum and recommended specs, our CapCut System Requirements for PC guide spells it all out. For most people, though, if your PC already runs day-to-day tasks comfortably, CapCut will be happy on it.
Quick tip: Close a few heavy browser tabs or background apps before installing. It won't change the install, but it makes that first launch feel snappier.
Step 1: Go to the official CapCut website
Open any web browser — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, it doesn't matter — and go to the official CapCut site. You can use the Download for Windows button near the top of this page, or type capcut.com straight into the address bar.
This is the step worth slowing down for. Searching "download capcut windows" can surface lookalike pages that wrap the installer in adware or charge for something that's actually free. Stick to the official domain and you avoid that entirely.
Heads up: If a page asks you to pay, install a "download manager" first, or complete a survey before downloading, close it. The real CapCut installer is free and comes directly from capcut.com.
Step 2: Download the Windows installer
On the CapCut homepage, find the Download button. The site usually detects that you're on Windows and offers the correct file automatically, so you rarely have to choose anything. Click it.
Your browser will start saving a file with a name like CapCut_installer.exe. It's typically around 100–200 MB, so on a normal connection it finishes in well under a minute. You'll usually see it in your browser's download bar or in your Downloads folder when it's done.
Step 3: Run the installer
Now you'll actually install CapCut on your PC. This part is mostly clicking Next.
- Open the downloaded file by double-clicking
CapCut_installer.exe. - If Windows shows a User Account Control box asking whether to allow the app to make changes, click Yes. That prompt is normal for any installer.
- Pick an install location if you're asked — the default is fine for almost everyone — then click Install.
The progress bar usually fills in about 30 to 60 seconds. When it's finished, CapCut often opens on its own.
If Windows SmartScreen appears: a blue "Windows protected your PC" box can pop up. Click More info, then Run anyway — but only because you downloaded the file from the official site. If you're ever unsure where a file came from, don't run it.
Step 4: Open CapCut and start editing
Once the install is done, launch CapCut. You'll land on a clean home screen with a few choices:
- Click Create project (sometimes labeled New project) to open the editor right away.
- You can sign in with a TikTok, Google, Facebook, or email account to sync projects and unlock cloud features — but that's optional. You can edit and export without any account at all.
Drag a video clip onto the timeline at the bottom and you're officially editing. That's the entire CapCut PC setup, start to finish.
What to do right after installing
A few small things make CapCut nicer to use from day one:
- Pin it for fast access. While CapCut is open, right-click its taskbar icon and choose Pin to taskbar. Now it's one click away every time.
- Import a test clip. Drag in a short video or a few photos to get a feel for the timeline before you tackle a real project.
- Explore the panels. The left side holds your media and effects; the right side controls the selected clip. Click around — nothing breaks.
- Decide on Pro later. The free version covers most editing. There's an optional CapCut Pro subscription for extra effects and assets, but you don't need it to start.
The first project always feels a little unfamiliar. After one short edit, the layout clicks and the rest comes quickly.
If something goes wrong
Most installs go smoothly, but here are the two snags people hit most often and how to clear them:
- The download won't start or the page looks wrong. You may have landed on a copycat site. Go back to
capcut.comand try again. If you'd rather skip the Microsoft Store route entirely, our guide on how to download CapCut without the Microsoft Store covers the direct method in detail. - The install fails partway. Make sure you have a couple of gigabytes of free space, briefly pause antivirus software if it's blocking the file, then run the installer again.
On a newer machine specifically, our Windows 11 download guide walks through the same process with notes tailored to that version.
