CapCut comes in more than one form. Besides the phone apps, there is an installed desktop app for Windows and macOS and a web version that runs in your browser at capcut.com. The CapCut Terms of Service list them side by side as the "CapCut Desktop version" and the "CapCut Web version", and note that versions of the platform may differ.

So which one should you use? It depends less on which is "better" and more on your computer, your internet connection and the kind of video you make. This guide compares them on the points that matter in practice and ends with a simple way to choose.

Quick answer
  • CapCut's own Terms list the desktop app and the web version (the official website) as separate versions of the same platform.
  • The desktop app needs a PC that meets the official requirements and installs locally; the web version needs only a modern browser and a steady connection.
  • Choose desktop for longer projects, local files and patchy internet; choose web for Chromebooks, shared or locked-down computers and quick edits.

The quick verdict

  • Pick the desktop app if your computer meets the requirements and you edit longer videos, work with large files stored on your drive, or sometimes have weak internet.
  • Pick the web version if you are on a Chromebook, a work or school computer where you cannot install software, an older PC that falls below the desktop requirements, or you just need a quick edit.

You do not have to choose forever. Many people install the desktop app at home and use the web version on other computers.

Hardware and system requirements

The desktop app runs on your own hardware, so your PC matters. The official Microsoft Store listing gives a minimum of Windows 10 or later, 8 GB of RAM, an Intel Core 6th generation or AMD Ryzen 1000 series processor or newer, DirectX 9 and 2 GB of video memory, with 16 GB of RAM recommended. Our page on CapCut system requirements for PC breaks those down, and Mac users can check the CapCut Mac system requirements.

The web version runs inside a browser tab, so it is less dependent on your operating system and works where the desktop installer cannot, such as on ChromeOS. Your browser and computer still do part of the work, so an up-to-date browser and enough free memory help, and very old browsers may not be supported.

If your PC is below the desktop minimum, read running CapCut on a low-end PC before deciding; the web version can be a practical stop-gap.

Internet connection and offline use

This is the biggest practical difference. The web version is part of CapCut's online platform, so it needs a working connection the whole time, and uploading large clips on a slow connection can take a while.

The desktop app also relies on the internet for installing, signing in, templates, stock music, effects, cloud storage and AI features, but your project and media can sit on your own drive. That makes it the better choice if your connection is unreliable. We explain what to prepare, and a quick test to run, in does CapCut work offline.

Accounts, storage and paid plans

  • Accounts: the web version runs on CapCut's platform and works with a CapCut account. On desktop, signing in mainly matters for syncing, cloud storage and paid features. Our guide on whether you need an account to use CapCut covers the details.
  • Storage: with the desktop app, your projects and exports live on your computer by default. Online work and CapCut Cloud Space live on CapCut's servers. The Terms say Cloud Space is not guaranteed to be free and advise you to keep your own backups.
  • Paid plans: the Terms say subscriptions on the web version are paid through your CapCut account, while subscriptions bought in the phone apps go through Apple or Google. See is CapCut free to use for how free and paid features differ.

Features and workflow

Both versions cover the everyday editing most people need: trimming and splitting, text and captions, music, transitions and exporting. Because CapCut updates each version on its own schedule and the Terms note that versions may differ, a specific tool can appear on one version before the other. If you depend on one feature, check that it is available in the version you plan to use.

Where the desktop app tends to feel better:

  • Longer timelines with many clips and layers, where local processing and a fast drive help.
  • Keyboard-driven editing. Our list of CapCut keyboard shortcuts for desktop shows how much time they save.
  • Large source files such as 4K footage, which do not have to be uploaded first.

Where the web version is handy: editing on a borrowed or shared computer, on a Chromebook, or when you just need to trim a clip and do not want to install anything.

Safety: use only the official versions

The CapCut web editor lives on CapCut's own website, and the desktop app comes from capcut.com or an official store listing. The Terms state that unofficial versions obtained from other platforms or websites are not authorised by CapCut.

  • Do not sign in to CapCut on look-alike "online CapCut" sites or through browser extensions that claim to be CapCut.
  • Do not download "CapCut desktop" installers from mirror sites.

Our guide on whether CapCut is safe to download shows how to check the publisher of an installer, and the CapCut on Chromebook guide explains the options on ChromeOS.

How to decide in 30 seconds

  1. Can you install software on this computer, and does it meet the requirements? If no, use the web version.
  2. Is your internet slow or unreliable? If yes, use the desktop app.
  3. Are your projects long or built from large files? If yes, the desktop app is usually smoother.
  4. Do you switch between computers a lot? The web version, or the desktop app with cloud storage, makes that easier.
