Many people want to try the CapCut desktop editor without handing over an email address first, and it is a fair thing to want. The short answer is that you do not need an account to download CapCut, and an account is not required for everything, but some features only work once you sign in.
This guide explains where that line falls, using CapCut's own Terms of Service and Privacy Policy (both last updated 15 April 2026 and checked on 16 October 2026), and covers what an account adds, the age rules, and how to sign in and leave safely.
- Downloading and installing the CapCut desktop app does not require an account.
- CapCut's Terms say some services require an account, including any paid plan; its Privacy Policy also covers people who use CapCut as guests.
- Sign in only inside the CapCut app or on capcut.com, and use CapCut's own account tools if you want to delete your account.
The short answer
Not always. The CapCut Terms of Service say that "to access or use some of our Services, you must create an account". The word "some" matters: the Privacy Policy separately describes how CapCut handles information when you use the services as a guest user, which shows that using CapCut without an account is expected for at least part of the product.
Exactly which desktop features a guest can use is not listed anywhere official, and it can vary by version and region. In practice, CapCut tells you when a feature needs you to sign in, so the easiest approach is to start without an account and only sign in when you reach something you actually want.
You never need an account to download CapCut. If a site asks you to log in or "verify" before it will give you the installer, you are not on the official download page.
When CapCut requires you to sign in
From CapCut's own documents, an account is clearly needed for these:
- Any paid plan. The Terms say that to buy or subscribe to CapCut Pro or other premium services you must first create an account and sign in.
- Cloud Space. CapCut's cloud storage for drafts and materials is tied to your account and, beyond any free allowance, to a paid plan or storage package.
- The web version. Working in the browser editor at capcut.com is built around your CapCut account. See CapCut web version vs desktop app.
Some AI features with limited free uses, such as auto captions, may also ask you to sign in so that CapCut can count your allowance. Our guide on whether CapCut is free to use explains those limits.
What an account adds
If you do sign in, these are the practical benefits:
- Moving between devices. With cloud storage you can reach the same drafts and materials on another computer. If you would rather not use the cloud, our guide on moving CapCut projects to a new PC covers the manual route.
- Paid features in one place. A plan bought with your account follows that account, so you can restore it after reinstalling. If Pro tools stay locked after signing in, see CapCut Pro features not working.
- A record of your work online. Useful if your computer fails, as long as you also keep your own backups. The Terms advise you to back up any content you value, because CapCut does not guarantee that stored content will always be available.
Which sign-in options can you use?
The CapCut sign-in screen shows the options available for your app version and region, which may include an email address and accounts from other services. You do not need a TikTok account to use CapCut unless you choose that sign-in option. Pick the one you are most likely to keep access to, because an account you cannot sign back in to is hard to recover.
- Sign in only inside the CapCut app or on capcut.com. Never type your password into a pop-up or site that merely claims to be "CapCut login".
- Keep your login details private. The Terms make you responsible for activity on your account and ask you to tell CapCut promptly if you think someone else has accessed it.
If signing in fails or keeps dropping, see CapCut login not working and CapCut keeps logging me out.
Age rules and parental consent
According to the Terms of Service, CapCut's services are intended only for people aged 13 and older, with extra limits in some countries. If you are 13 or older but under 18 (or under the age of majority where you live), you may only use CapCut with the consent of a parent or legal guardian, who should review the Terms with you.
If you are setting CapCut up on a family computer, it is worth going through the account and privacy settings together after the first sign-in. Our guide on setting up CapCut after installing it on PC walks through the first-run screens.
How to delete a CapCut account
If you created an account and no longer want it, the Terms describe two official routes:
- Use the Manage account page on the CapCut platform and choose to delete your account.
- Or submit a deletion request through CapCut's privacy requests form.
Deletion is permanent. The Terms say you will not be able to reactivate the account or recover data and content associated with it, so export or copy anything you want to keep first. Cancel any paid subscription through the account you paid with before you delete.
Deleting your account does not remove the desktop app. To remove the program as well, see how to uninstall CapCut on Windows or on Mac.
